Mountain Trout – May 2001

Emma @ 1 years old. Josh very kindly offered to have us visit his De Beers camp at the Mountain Trout Resort just short of Barbeton at the start of the kitchen saga so that we could avoid the sinkless state for a few days. (Were still being promised a sink on the Monday and not the 2 weeks later as it turned out). We left early on the Saturday morning in the Golf for the short 4 hour drive. We arrived and watched the Rugby on Josh’s ever roaming satellite TV and then headed off for a late lunch and a go at the trout fishing. Vaughn was the first one to get a bite and haul a fish in just to lose it at the last moment as we tried to land it. I got a bite and also managed to lose the trout at the last moment of landing it. We later figured out that we were overeager and should play the fish a little more. After that there were no more bites and with a shrug of disgust we toddled off to the beginners pool for idiots. Vaughn snagged a trout on the first cast and Josh soon followed that we at least had trout for dinner. M adapted well to the whole fishing thing and was keenly hanging onto our left legs as we fly fished – very smart baby! She also loved feeding all the tiddlers and older fish in the breeding ponds at the reception, the more they splashed the better she liked it. Many hours were spent kneeling in the muck feeding the fish pellet by pellet.

The trout was great and was only cooked for the recommended 4 minutes so that the 38 boned in the back would not become bound to the back muscle. (Many hours of explaination on the cooking process from the manager). We decided to try our luck in the morning and soon had lots of bites and had pulled a couple of good sized fish. Back to base for breakfast and then we decided to head up to the Waterfall. We woosed out and drove most of the way, walking the final 500m in riverine bush – really beautiful. M loved the waterfall and the really ancient rocks. The stream was also interesting, especially Uncle Josh’s face after Mealie Man told him that the had just drunk a whole load of worms from the stream. A quick walk back and we were getting ready for the ride home. It was a great weekend, only sorry that Cavan and Sue were not there to enjoy it as well but we will do it again soon.
