Emma: week 4 – 24 May 2000

Hi all

I forgot to tell everyone that Emma gained 150g at her last check up. She seems to be gaining steadily if slowly. This effectively means that she will be really cheap on clothes as she will still be in her 0-3 month gear at 6 months but it does mean many more Step 1 (newborn) nappies.

Mom went back to work on Monday so Tuesday was spent sleeping as Emma had been up every two hours on Sunday night, needless to say mom was a little frazzled by the time Monday night arrived. She was a gem on Monday night sleeping for 5 and a half and five hours respectively. Hopefully the two hour stint was a growth spurt and she will have put on a little more weight this week. She gained 400g this week – YAY so she is now 3.7 kg. (she has gained 1kg in one month)

She has also been a little sick, she picked up a slight cold so we now have a karvol (similar to Vicks) humidifier going in our room – all our noses are really clear! Poor little thing was snoring last night with her icky nose!

Emma is starting to recognise faces and can she now frowns when she sees a new face that she does not know. She is following things and will follow the rattle with her eyes and will turn her head up to see who is talking behind her. She has also discovered her hands – she spent a good five minutes today carefully clenching and unclenching her hands in front of her face – big concentration. We are also starting to see the faint glimmers of a smile this morning Vaughn was pulling funny faces at her and the corners of her mouth were turning up – she would stop ‘smile in training’ when he stopped. Hopefully we will have full toothless grins soon.

Sue is back from the big hole and is doing a sterling job of making us do things. Today we went to lunch and there is lots more excitement before she starts working on Monday. Emma, true to form, slept through lunch and Sue is convinced that she is actually a doll as she is always asleep when she comes over. Cavan got to practice the daddy thing last night and held her for a bit and even had a photo (the camera had film in this time). All our friends have been really amazing and have not run off screaming into the distance – we thought that Emma would have changed things and people would not want to spend time with us or go away with us but they are all sticking in there! Gee, we feel special!

On the Parent front, I have got a very cool rocker to feed Emma in and to help her fall asleep, especially in the wee hours of the morning. It is working really well but she is still very awake after the early morning feed till the definite 8am feed. Vaughn got a very exciting mountain bike (shocks and all), there are big plans for the boys (Cavan, Josh and Vaughn) to go cycling and for Sue, Emma and I to meet them at country locations for breakfast. Emma will have to wait a few months and gain control of her head before she can join them on their trips.

Other than that there is not much to report, the next update will be 26 June when Emma will be 2 months old, so you all get a bit of a break from the boring baby news!

have a great week
love us
Carrie, Vaughn and Emma
